1. Increase in Road traffic. This proposed location has no shops or local amenities. Even though town is only a mile away, it is too far to walk with heavy shopping, and for the elderly or unfit, the hilly terrain encourages people to drive. Into a town with limited parking, and congestion problems, this cannot tie in with local and national policies on reduction of road risk, reduction in congestion and encouraging people to be less sedentary in their life styles. This will also affect the historic area of Greenside - one of Kendal's prettiest areas- this is already blighted by traffic, and if this proposal goes ahead it only get worse.
2. Restricted road access to the location. The only way to get to this part of town by car is through residential areas - via Gillingate ( and Ghyllside School, where this proposal must increase road injury risks); via Beast Banks or via Vicarage Road, which is already crumbling under the weight of traffic. Also Brigsteer Road itself is far from ideal. Many families on the estate, including us, send our children to Ghyllside School. It is walkable, and pleasant, except for the narrow pavements and the alarmingly fast cars on the road. Street lighting is not ideal, and in the dark days of winter, even now I am reluctant to walk my four year old home after dark. I'm not sure at what age I will be happy to allow Heather to walk to school on her own, for fear of the traffic.
Once again I would like to stress that Brigsteer Road is a minor road, not suitable for larger volumes of traffic associated with residential development and an employment area.
3. Loss of greenbelt land. The proposed development area is regularly used by dog walkers, hikers, and local residents as a pleasant recreational area. It is also a natural barrier from speeding traffic on the A591. I understand from the Cumbria Wildlife Trust that there are no protected species known about in this area, but that aside, it is still a green space full of all types of wildlife, flowers, birds, rabbits etc etc. How can we teach our children to respect the planet around them if we routinely pave it over, and build houses and roads on it?
4. Other infrastructure considerations. Any increase in development to the South of town will lead to increased traffic on the Milnthorpe Road, which already gets heavily congested. Also, are the towns water supply and and wastewater treatment capability sufficient to meet the additional demand? I will be investigating this with United Utilities.

These areas are on the boundary of the National Park. They are a vital boundary to the town from encroaching to the edge of the national park. The racecourse is of historical interest to the town, and should be maintained as such. To claim that these areas should become something other than the employment areas (via farming), and community areas that they already are, is ridiculous.
