Please explain your reasons
I am writing to you in response to the proposals outlined under the ‘Local Development Framework’ for the western approaches to Kendal – areas R129M, E33 and SL1B.
I wish to register my objections to these three proposed developments, which will change the character of this attractive rural gateway into Kendal on the edge of a sensitive National Park and major public space of outstanding natural beauty of Scouts Scar.
In each case my objections are both aesthetic and in terms of the increased traffic generation. If I may take the first point, the visual impact will be very considerable on an area of beauty and public amenity, which very much acts as a ‘lungs’ to the town. In particular the housing proposal (R129M) will have greatest impact in my view, as will the industrial area E33, although I acknowledge the waste facility (SL1B) may be less intrusive if contained within the old quarry workings. As a frequent walker around Scouts Scar the first two developments can only have an adverse impact on the aesthetic character of the area. It was for good reason that the National Park boundary was drawn adjacent to these sites, as close to the town as was feasible, and we should not be encroaching on that land.
The second objection concerns the generation of traffic on roads that are both restricted in size (only designed for light rural traffic) and which will put enormous extra pressure on Beasts Banks, All Hallows Lane and Gillinggate, which already have sufficient through traffic to deal with. From personal experience as a local resident living on the junction of Beast Banks and Belmont we have had to move into a bedroom at the back of our house because of the problems of traffic noise as vehicles try to negotiate a steep hill and sharp corner. This can only get worse. The existing refuse trucks going to and fro from site E33 already create difficulties with traffic flow up Beast Banks, this may become intolerable with extra lorries to both the refuse and industrial sites proposed. Quarrying lorries are already restricted from entering Greenside, with a purpose built entry provided for them onto the A591 dual carriageway, the proposal will completely counter this. Then, of course, there will be a considerable increase in cars from the proposed housing development on roads not designed for such numbers.
For these reasons I object to the proposals and ask for my views to be taken into consideration by SLDC.
