Development here would seriously diminish the appearance and value of these open spaces. Not only would it diminish the attractiveness of a gateway into Kendal, but it would also compromise the usefulness of the remaining grazing land, thus opening up the possibility of even more building development subsequently.

Insensitive developments at this site will destroy the natural habitat for rare wildlife including tawny owls , nuthatches, woodpeckers and bats, which are frequently observed by local residents ( see also the recent Bat Inspection Survey - Marshall Ecology report ref 100404/01.1)
Development here would be visually intrusive and would also give rise to noise and light pollution, changing the whole rural character of the area.
R97 development would also require changes to the access lane which would have a detrimental visual impact and may well threaten the delicate ecological balance of the adjacent stream ( Natland Beck). The adjacent farmhouse is listed - an increase in vehicular traffic would surely be detrimental to it and the local area, separating the farm buildings from grazing land. The farm also runs as a successful and popular local farm-shop business, built on the attraction of it's rural setting. This may well be threatened by insensitive development. Who will want to visit a farm shop adjacent to built-up land? Furthermore, if R104 and R97 ( curently grazing land) are lost to urban development, how can the farm sustain it's dairy herd?
R104 runs alongside a line of spectacular mature beech trees - what a dreadful shame if these were threatened and lost for ever. Development of R104 would spoil the attractive outlook for walkers and cyclists using the canal path.
The willingness of landowners to permit a change of use should not over-ride the potentially destructive ( and irreversible) ecological impact that such development would have. These areas of grazing land significantly contribute to the rural identity and character of Kendal. Building on these plots would destroy such identity ( not to mention the destruction of rare wildlife habitats as outlined above).

Development here will cause visual, sound and light pollution and could well affect the delicate ecology of Natland Beck. Vehicular access would mean the narrow lane would need substantial buidling work. Building on the ON12 plot itself could well cause problems with flooding as this field regularly floods.
