Land reference R130 has been designated as Amenity open space (no public access). This land would be more useful if developed and would take pressure off premium agricultural land. There is much in the media about forth coming food shortages and the increasing pressure there will be on productive farm land. As this field is of limited productive value it would make better sense to develope this before taking prime agricultural land. R130 is ideally suited to mixed development, as housing is needed within the town boundary and a small supermarket is desperately needed within walking distance of Croftlands and other residential areas in the town. Developing the land would also potentially release the river bank as public amenity with access and a foot path. In this way the land would be a far greater amenity than at present. I understand the cooperative and Sainsbury's are both looking for suitable sites in Ulverston for a small supermarket. Surely this would be better within easy access of housing rather than forcing people to drive to do their shopping.
