I appreciate that Kendal needs to continue to develop to meet the needs of its population. There is certainly a need to bring more jobs to the town. Losing both Provincial and K Shoes has had the effect that many workers commute to Lancaster, Preston, Lytham and some much further afield. However, I am not convinced of the need for a great many more houses. The generation now retired has generally been able to afford to stay in their family homes. Many of those heading for retirement are much more likely to need to downsize releasing housing. Granted not much of this will be affordable housing - but larger properties can be converted into flats.
I would encourage developments within the town. Developments like those at the Cock & Dolphin are an example of what can be achieved. I would be sad to see the town sprawl into the surrounding green fields as this would change the character of a town that nestles in its valley. In particular I think the land by Scroggs Wood should be protected. It is the only place I have seen a badger set and friends have reported seeing kingfisher and red squirrel.
I would welcome a good development including employment at the canal head and development of the old auction mart site.
