Please explain your reasons
We have been residents of the village of Natland for 46 years and have found it a pleasant and attractive place to live. However over these years we have seen the character of Natland being slowly eroded by continuous housing development. It seems to never end. Whilst sensible development is essential to maintain the viability of Natland, it’s character is now seriously threatened. To build a further 60 or so houses will, I fear, prove too much and confirm Natland as a dormitory suburb of Kendal rather than a village. This is certainly against the wishes of the majority of residents. A survey taken for the Parish Plan showed that 98% of the residents replying wished to retain the character of the Village and housing development was seen as predominately the greatest threat.
The current development of the Holmes Nursery site plus the proposed development of the Home field will build up to 40 houses in the centre of the village probably all two storey. This development with associated lighting etc will completely change the character of the centre of the village from a former market garden and a green field to a high density, two storey housing complex. What a change this will be for people living in the village and what a chamge to Natland’s image to those passing through. The 40 or so houses proposed for the centre of Natland is a very insignificant proportion of the thousands of houses required by the strategy but a highly significant one for Natland. The 28 houses for the Home Field site could easily be assimilated elsewhere in the Kendal Area. It should be noted that the Holmes site was not included in the Land Allocation proposed sites. We suggest that the Home Field site be removed from the framework plan to recognise the contribution that the Holmes site is making to the the housing target.
It is our submission that the intensive development of the centre of Natland leading to the further eroding of the character of the village should be avoided so that Natland can remain an attractive village, retain its character and continue to be a pleasant place to live.
