"The Mikado" is a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta which tells the story of Nanki-Poo, the son of the Mikado (Emperor), who disguises himself as a wandering minstrel to avoid an unwanted marriage and pursue his love, Yum-Yum. SAOS are performing the "Black and White" version set in a stylized, monochrome world inspired by the Marx Brothers and British variety shows of the 1920s and 30s. It uses the opera as a platform to satirize English society.
